Warappa Kreek is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The very important target species the Rufous Crab Hawk Buteogallus aequinoctialis is extremely common in the whole area. The near-endemic Blood-coloured Woodpecker Veniliornis sanguineus and the endemic Arrowhead Piculet Picumnus minutissimu are also common, but not always easy to spot.
The Blackish Antbird Cercomacra nigrescens can be found in Bakkie and the Ashy-headed Greenlet Hylophilus pectoralis is easy to find. Spectacular birds like Scarlet Ibis Eudocimus ruber, Roseate Spoonbill Platalea ajaja and Wood Stork Mycteria Americana are often encountered. And sometimes a Jabiru Jabiru mycteria is present. The last four birds may forage on the coastal mudflats together with thousands of North American shorebirds, egrets, Black Skimmers Rynchops niger and night herons. An observation hut in front of the mangroves overlooks the ocean and will give you the opportunity to have a marvelous view of these birds.
The Pygmy Kingfisher Chloroceryle aenea is very common in the old mangrove forest and can be seen sitting on the arch-shaped stilt roots of the Red Mangrove. The much rarer Green-and-Rufous Kingfisher Chloroceryle inda also occurs here. Eight species of Woodpeckers are regularly seen. And the spectacular Toco Toucan Ramphastos toco has been sighted.
In total 166 species have been identified in the area, but this number will surely increase when more observations have taken place.
The bird watching excursions are guided by an English and French speaking ornithologist.
